South Korea's impeached president released from prison
Yoon Suk Yeol has been released from a detention centre a day after the Seoul central district court accepted Yoon's petition to cancel his custody. The impeached president was greeted by more than 50,000 supporters in the capital while a counter-protest took place nearby. In a statement on Facebook, Yoon said: 'I would like to thank the central district court for their courage and determination in correcting the illegality.' Despite his release, Yoon still faces criminal and impeachment trials after he was arrested for his failed attempt to impose martial law on 3 December. If he is found guilty of insurrection, he could face life imprisonment or the death penalty. Meanwhile, if his impeachment is upheld, he would be removed from office permanently, triggering a snap election within 60 days South Korea court cancels President Yoon’s detention as insurrection case continues
