How the world reacted to Trump’s plan to ‘own’ Gaza
Over the course of this week, Donald Trump has repeatedly restated his proposal to take over Gaza amid widespread condemnation and opposition – including from his own supporters. But around the world, the proposal has been met with anger and blunt rejection from regional allies, as well as the UN secretary general who has warned that “it is essential to avoid any form of ethnic cleansing”. In Gaza, Palestinians, sheltering in the ruins of their homes, or crammed into makeshift camps, have reacted with anger and disbelief to Trump’s plan, which it later emerged purely his own and had not been subject to detailed discussion with aides. Abu Firas, a Palestinian who lives in a tent on the coast after his home in eastern Khan Younis was destroyed, told our correspondents: “We would rather die here than leave this land.
