The United States plans to supply Taiwan with weapons worth $ 1.1 billion

The administration of US President Joe Biden intends to formally ask Congress to approve a $1.1 billion arms sale to Taiwan, Politico reports.
The delivery includes 60 anti-ship missiles, 100 air-to-air missiles and funds to renew an existing surveillance radar contract.

Lawmakers are likely to approve the sale, but the process could be delayed given the ongoing recession in Congress, sources say.

The United States remains committed to the so-called One China Policy, as set out in the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979. The law assumes that Washington has no official diplomatic relations with Taipei. With the passage of the law, the White House has de facto recognized Beijing as the government of all of China, including Taiwan. This was accompanied by the doctrine of "strategic ambiguity", according to which the United States renounces direct and categorical obligations to support Taiwan in the event of a military invasion by China.

Lawmakers from both the US Democratic and Republican parties are now pushing for an end to the policy as "Taiwan faces increasingly aggressive threats and intimidation tactics from the Chinese military."

🇹🇼During her visit to Taiwan, Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi expressed concern about Beijing's attempts to influence Taipei.
Beijing condemned Pelosi for the visit and imposed personal sanctions on the politician, as well as sanctions against Taiwan. The day after a delegation from the United States led by the speaker of the House left Taiwan, China began large-scale military exercises around the island.
