Raphael Magezi, the local government minister addressing the local government leaders and chief administrative officers from the greater Mbarara district yesterday 27th June 2022, he said that government has finally decided to fire and advertise the jobs for the teachers who will keep resisting and continue to strike.
Teachers who have been striking against government over being underpaid for months, were given a deadline of today, Tuesday 28th June 2022 to stop their acts or rather risk losing their jobs and reminded to be thankful because they had been being paid since the covid-19 pandemic hit the country unlike their fellow teachers who work with different private sectors.
“As government we have agreed that all those that will not have returned to class by Tuesday, will have absconded from duty henceforth, sacked and their jobs will be advertised” Magezisaid adding that “we have issued directives to all chief administrative officers, district education officers, district inspector of schools, sub county and parish chiefs to go to all schools and compile lists of all thise that have refused to return to class. You are being paid more than teachers in private schools, doing the covid-19 pandemic, we continued to pay you. Why didn’t you refuse this money? You cannot hold the government at ransom when discussions and negotiations to have your grievances addressed are ongoing” He said.
He then asked local government leaders to help them through this process and submit the teachers who have refused to go back to their jobs and they start advertising to get new teachers.
